https://i-invdn-com.akamaized.net/trkd-images/LYNXMPEG0T0VE_L.jpgFRANKFURT (Reuters) – Utility Uniper (DE:) has drawn up a roadmap to phase out its German hard coal-fired power plants over the next five years, two people familiar with the matter said, as the group intensifies efforts to wean itself off the fuel.
Under the plans, about 1.5 GW of capacity, consisting of three blocks at its Scholven plant as well as the Wilhelmshaven power station, will be shut down by the end of 2022, the people said, adding a further 1.4 GW at the Staudinger and Heyden sites will follow by end-2025.
The planned closures represent about half of Uniper’s total hard coal-fired capacity in Europe and come at a time when investors and governments demand sustainable business models that do not rely on fossil-fuels.
