‘I’m friends with George Bush. In fact, I’m friends with a lot of people who don’t share the same beliefs that I have. Just because I don’t agree with someone on everything doesn’t mean that I’m not going to be friends with them. When I say be kind to one another, I don’t mean only the people that think the same way that you do. I mean be kind to everyone.”

Ellen DeGeneres, a self-proclaimed “gay Hollywood liberal,” was responding to the firestorm that erupted across social media when she was spotted sitting next to former president George W. Bush at a Dallas Cowboys game on Sunday.

“People were upset,” she said in a segment slated to air on Tuesday. “A lot of people were mad, and they did what people do when they’re mad: They tweet.”

Indeed they do. Twitter TWTR, -1.57% was filled with tweets like this:

DeGeneres explained that she and her wife, Portia de Rossi, were invited to the game by Charlotte Jones, the daughter of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
